PLAY ON!

Rick Abbot’s hilarious take on amateur drama group putting on a production… Play On. Nothing like KATS, at all, was a real crowd pleaser. The latest NODA review sums it all up very nicely!

SEPTEMBER 2025

Play On

Hot on the success of Our House – the sell out musical – we presented Play On: A comedy by Rick Abbot involving an amateur drama group trying to put on a play despite maddening interference from the haughty author!

This show was directed by Christine Bonner and Jules McColl.

Meet The Cast & Crew

Christine Bonner

Christine is thrilled to be taking part in Play On! as Gerry the director. Acting and directing simultaneously has brought its own challenges and at times she has not been sure whether she’s Christine or Gerry! Christine has loved working with this talented team of actors and crew, and rehearsals have provided a great deal of hilarity. She hopes you enjoy Play On! As much as the cast have enjoyed producing it./span>

Jasmine Cox

Jasmine is so excited to be in another KATS play. After Wind in the Willows in 2024 she took a break before delving into Shakespeare with the Inn Theatre Company in their recent Richard III and upcoming Dreams, Charms & Phantoms touring the South West in November. After a multitude of male characters this is the first time in years she gets to wear a dress on stage!!

Jackie Hodges

Jackie is loving being part of another KATS production and is delighted to introduce you to the somewhat bonkers budding playwright, Phyllis Montague. Jackie is thoroughly enjoying performing with such a talented cast and supportive crew: a lot of work and much hilarity has gone into rehearsals – we hope you enjoy the results!

Jules McColl

Jules is not sure juggling directing with acting is a good idea – too many hats – and needs a bigger head! But she has thoroughly enjoyed being part of this ‘team’ and to be working with so many youngsters! Acting in a play within in a play is great fun – no one has a clue what is going on!!

Daryna Handzeshyna

This is Daryna’s first show with KATS and it has been such a pleasure to meet and act with everyone! She really enjoys being in both plays and musicals and hopes to take it up professionally some day. Daryna has been in KCC’s Chicago and MAD Kids Matilda and has also enjoyed dancing for the last 10 years.

Oli van Es

This is Oli’s second show with KATS having thoroughly enjoyed playing Lewis in Our House. Oli says he loves playing drunk for the second time … becoming a theme! He has really embraced switching between both characters…now sit back and enjoy!

Brynn Walsh

While Brynn has previously been a part of KATS musicals such as ‘Our house’ where he played the role of Emmo he is now taking part in his first play which he thought may be not as challenging as a musical but oh how he thought wrong! Nevertheless Brynn’s experience in ‘Play On!’ as Henry has been truly fantastic and he has even learnt life skills like how to use a monocle. Away from the production Brynn is preparing for his grade 8 piano which he hopes to complete in December. He hopes you enjoy the show and he wants to thank all the cast and crew for being absolutely blooming amazing.

Dina White

Dina has been a member of KATS for several years now. She has been in multiple shows most recently playing ‘Billie’ in ‘Our House The Musical’. Dina also performs for other local amateur dramatic groups including MAD, The Salcombe Players and The Inn Theatre Company. Dina has thoroughly enjoyed bringing the part of Aggie to life because the character is sassy and stubborn so there isn’t a lot of acting required! She hopes you enjoy the show!

Andy Wood

This is Andy’s third KATS production, and clearly, they’ve learned nothing – he’s back and playing three roles: Saul, Dr Forbes, and a mysterious villain (he promises to keep track). After two smaller parts, he is thrilled to return to more lines, more drama, and probably at least one evil laugh! Buckle up!

Karen Sandy – Higham: Stage Set and Construction

Karen only got involved in amateur dramatics when she and husband Paul moved to Devon nearly 3 years ago and although not keen to ‘tread the boards’, she has absolutely loved every minute of being a part of the KATS team. “Meeting and working with so many people of all ages has been so enjoyable and a refreshing change from my old life working in the corporate IT world. You should try it!”.

This is Karen’s third KATS production as lead set designer. She continues to get that buzz from all the stages of a production. Attending the early auditions and watching rehearsals all helps develop an understanding of how the set needs to work for the cast members as well as directors. She loves to spend her free time researching material and creates mood boards at home.

She is always grateful for the help from other members of the KATS design team (Anne and Sylvia in particular) and this year is lucky enough to have her husband Paul and friend Chris Brock (a double act themselves) to build the set.

Jill Brock: Costumes and Props

Jill could say that it’s been really hard creating costumes which need to look a bit sh*t, but actually it’s been fairly straightforward – and great fun. It’s also been a fantastic excuse for any costumes which were meant to be perfect but aren’t! How to tell which is which…
